Poster Abstract: Title: Prevalence of Classes of Anticancer Agents Used in Cancer Treatment in Current Practice

Background:
Drug therapy for cancer continues to evolve and new medications are marketed in the US every year. Where once chemotherapy was the predominant drug therapy used in the treatment of cancer, drug therapies now include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, and targeted therapy. In 2022, nine new medications were marketed for cancer treatment, six drugs are considered immunotherapy, and three drugs are considered targeted therapies. None of the new drugs are classified as classical chemotherapy.

As cancer drug therapy evolves it’s essential that healthcare professionals receive education on new classes of anticancer therapy medications. This pilot study will help determine the prevalence of different classes of anticancer therapy in current practice for common cancers including breast cancer, lung cancer and colon cancer. The information from this pilot study will be used in a project to evaluate if the focus in oncology education in US healthcare curriculums reflects current drug therapies used in practice.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of predefined classes of anticancer agents used in the treatment of common malignancies including breast cancer, colon cancer and non-small cell lung cancer. The broad classification of anticancer agents used for this study include chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and miscellaneous.


Methods: This is a single-center retrospective review of electronic medical records of patients with breast cancer, colon cancer, or NSCLC treated within a three-month period at UC Health Barret Cancer Center in 2023 to determine the prevalence of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted anticancer therapy. This study has been approved by the University of Cincinnati IRB. Inclusion criteria includes the electronic health records of patients at least 18 years of age, diagnosis of breast cancer, lung cancer or colon cancer, and receiving anticancer treatment in the Barrett Cancer Center in 2023. The primary endpoint is to determine the prevalence of chemotherapy, immunotherapy, targeted anticancer therapy and/or combination in patients with breast cancer, colon cancer, or NSCLC. The secondary endpoint is to determine the prevalence of individual anticancer medications within the predefined classes. All endpoints will be described with descriptive statistics.
